Black Cabbage

Rapa Pekinensis group

Dark green baby leaves, excellent for combining with other salad greens.

Cultivation: Sow from early September to late October and February-April. Prior to sowing add a good layer of mushroom compost and rake in complete organic fertiliser.

Sow seed 1 cm apart in 5 mm deep furrows about 60 cm apart. Thin the plants to about 8 cm in the row. Autumn sown plants can stay in the ground and be harvested several times.

Cabbage Perennial Couve Tronchuda

brassica oleracea

This particular selection, by Bob Reid, was collected from a village in Portugal. It has large smooth sweet flavoured soft leaves, ideal for all recipes using cabbage leaves. The plant grows to about 1m by 1m and produces plentiful leaves throughout the year, so leave enough room for this plant to occupy. It is very slow to go to seed.

Sow late February/March and September/October, 5mm deep in seed tray or open ground. Thin out when plants are 12 cm tall. Allow 40 cm between plants. Apply 100g per sqm of Complete Organic Fertiliser.

De Zhou Chinese Cabbage

Open pollinated rare heirloom. Fast growing open headed light green leaved beautiful flavoured Chinese cabbage, 30cm by 30cm, a variety grown by Chinese market gardeners in Communist China and professionally bred, this variety was praised by the communist leaders and so given the ultimate accolade of 'Good cabbage”. Sow in open ground 5mm deep in late Summer, early Autumn. Keep moist. Feed with COF twice in growing season, will mature quickly by mid- Winter. If sown in Spring, it will go to seed in a few weeks.

Large Chinese Cabbage

An excellent large wong bok type. Very slow bolting. Club root tolerant and fusarium resistant. Ideal for Tasmania. Sow early to mid Spring and again late Summer to Autumn in well composted, airy seed beds. Use complete organic fertiliser. Requires lots of water when growing. Space seed 60 cm apart, about 5 mm deep with 60 cm between rows. Control slugs with pellets.

Small Chinese Cabbage f1 Hybrid

A small, fantastic, ball head, bright green, sweet, tasty cabbage. Use in stir fries or eat raw. Slow to bolt. Cultivation; Add a layer of mushroom compost and top off with sheep manure and bone meal. Dig in and rake bed until a fine tilth is achieved. Make depressions about 5 mm deep and sow 3 or 4 seeds in this depression about 1cm apart. Cover with fine soil. Thin out when first true leaves appear. Keep well watered.
