Black Cabbage

Rapa Pekinensis group

Dark green baby leaves, excellent for combining with other salad greens.

Cultivation: Sow from early September to late October and February-April. Prior to sowing add a good layer of mushroom compost and rake in complete organic fertiliser.

Sow seed 1 cm apart in 5 mm deep furrows about 60 cm apart. Thin the plants to about 8 cm in the row. Autumn sown plants can stay in the ground and be harvested several times.

Cabbage Perennial Couve Tronchuda

brassica oleracea

This particular selection, called Beira, has large smooth sweet flavoured soft leaves, ideal for all recipes using cabbage leaves. The plant grows to about 1m by 1m and produces plentiful leaves throughout the year, so leave enough room for this plant to occupy. It is very slow to go to seed.

Sow late February/March and September/October, 5mm deep in seed tray or open ground. Thin out when plants are 12 cm tall. Allow 40 cm between plants. Apply 100g per sqm of Complete Organic Fertiliser.

Large Chinese Cabbage

An excellent large wong bok type. Very slow bolting. Club root tolerant and fusarium resistant. Ideal for Tasmania. Sow early to mid Spring and again late Summer to Autumn in well composted, airy seed beds. Use complete organic fertiliser. Requires lots of water when growing. Space seed 60 cm apart, about 5 mm deep with 60 cm between rows. Control slugs with pellets.

Small Chinese Cabbage f1 Hybrid

A small, fantastic, ball head, bright green, sweet, tasty cabbage. Use in stir fries or eat raw. Slow to bolt. Cultivation; Add a layer of mushroom compost and top off with sheep manure and bone meal. Dig in and rake bed until a fine tilth is achieved. Make depressions about 5 mm deep and sow 3 or 4 seeds in this depression about 1cm apart. Cover with fine soil. Thin out when first true leaves appear. Keep well watered. Sow early to mid Spring and again late Summer to Autumn.Control slugs with pellets.

Sweet Green Cabbage (ball head)

Soft, sweet, compact ball head cabbage with tight leaves. Superb in stir fries, salads or boiled. Lovely texture. Matures fairly early: 80-90 days. Reliable in most seasons. In our trials it performed very well over Winter. Did not bolt, so can sow Spring through to late Summer. Very versatile. Sow 5mm deep.
